Sundstrand Sauer Danfoss Series 20 How To Tell Good & Bad Shaft Seals

As you can see in diagram #1, it shows the correct shaft seals. How they are clear of nicks, burrs, grooves, contamination and fractures.

In diagram #2 it shows the grooves in it mean there was excessive contamination. You can see this in the bronze one on the left. Also, tremendous outside pressure put against the mating seal parts, could have been caused by a gear box that was not vented properly.

Diagram #3 also shows scoring which means there was abrasive contamination that was between the two mating seal parts. It could have came from outside the system or in the fluid.

Diagram #4 shows a fractured at the top of the seal. This was probably caused by someone not installing the seal correctly. This is why you may need to take to a hydraulic dealer to get it professional put in or get help to put it right.
